Lord's Prayer: The Pattern of Names

Submitted by garybeck on

Our heavenly Father,
Whose Name is worthy of worship.

Your reign is under way.
(Your Name is our King.)

Your will in coming into being, as in the universe and our world.
(Your Name is our Creator.)

Give us this day to make our bread.
(Your Name is our Provider.)

Let go of our debts.
(Your Name is our Forgiver.)

And we will let go of our debtors.
(Your Name is our Teacher.)

Lead us not into trials.
(Your Name is our Guide.)

Deliver us from what is worthless.
(Your Name is our Savior.)

For yours is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, forever and ever.
Amen.

Description

In Greek and many other ancient languages, the concept of one's "name" is broader than the modern usage. It encompassed one's reputation and attributes. In Hebrew, one such meaning of the Name revealed to Moses (I am, Who am) is "the Being of Existence." This prayer extends this idea highlighting how the Lord's Prayer refers to different aspects of God. The text will seem familiar but different than the traditional Lord's Prayer because it is based on translation work explained in our Lord's Prayer page rather than the KJV.  Phrases in parentheses are obviously additions or reflections on the original.
